It is amazing how a mandate affects one’s life direction and determines their every move. It is interesting to get this revelation that unless an individual understands their purpose and mandate in life many organisations would never get off the ground. Each and every organisation that exists because of some kind of a mandate that it serves or represents, that came through an individual. A mandate is an idea, a conviction, a vision, a goal or an ideal upon which an organisation was established in the first instance. Unpacking what a mandate is, was the most revealing and exciting moment where I realised that it is imperative to understand the mandate of each organisation so that the organisation will be able to put strategies in place that link directly to its mandate.
The mandate will always be linked to the empowering provisions of what prompted the founder of the organisation to start the organisation. The mandate of a church would come from the Bible as the empowering provision whereas the mandate of a government department would come from the constitution of the country in which that department operates. The mandate of a company would come from the constitution or the articles of association of that company.
Each organisation needs to fully understand its mandate in order to create a long lasting vision from which the organisation will derive its strategic goals and objectives. As soon as the organisation crafted its objectives it would then be able to pen down the activities and strategies that would be carried out in line with the mandate.
Wouldn’t it be nice if all people within organisations understood the mandates of the organisations? Wouldn’t it be even better if they knew what their individual mandates are, so they would not waste their time and energy joining the company not aligned to their mandate and be frustrated or end up frustrating the company or organisation because it is not giving them what they are about?
Your mandate shapes your thinking, your career choice, the decisions you take about your life, your way of doing things and the kind of people you associate with. I’m hoping that this book will take you through the journey of understanding your own mandate so that you become relevant in your dealings. No understanding of mandate, no vision; no vision, no goal; no goal, no strategy; no strategy, no life plan; no life plan, no work done. Hence the stagnancy of the lives of many people we meet daily! Know your mandate! Live your mandate! Protect your mandate!
